There isn't a large study that gives a definitive breakdown for Staffies specifically. Across all dogs in UK vet records, cancer is the most common recorded cause of death, followed by musculoskeletal and neurological problems. Nordic breed data for Staffies points in a similar direction, with tumours and joint problems featuring prominently, alongside old age.

Is L2HGA painful?

Nobody can say exactly what an affected dog feels, but the signs, such as seizures, tremors, stiffness and loss of coordination, are clearly distressing and affect quality of life. There's no cure. A vet can help manage symptoms like seizures, and how well a dog copes varies a lot. The best protection is buying from DNA-tested parents.

Should I buy a Staffy without DNA-tested parents?

It's a risk that's easy to avoid. Without results for both parents, there's no way to know whether your puppy could be affected by L2HGA or hereditary cataract. The UK Kennel Club lists both DNA tests as best practice for the breed. If the parents weren't tested, ask whether the puppy can be tested before you commit.

Many vets start treating medium-sized dogs like Staffies as seniors from around eight years old. That's the point to consider six-monthly checks and routine blood tests, even if your dog still acts like a youngster.

It depends on how you'd cover a large, unexpected vet bill. Staffies are prone to ongoing conditions like skin allergies and occasional expensive ones like cruciate surgery. Check how a policy treats pre-existing, hereditary and chronic conditions, annual limits and excesses, and read the Product Disclosure Statement. Insuring while your dog is young and healthy usually means fewer exclusions.
