Staffy Clothes: Best Coats and Jumpers

Most Staffies benefit from a coat when it’s cold, wet or windy. The Kennel Club describes the Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s coat as smooth, short and close, so there’s very little natural insulation, and Blue Cross has named Staffies among the short-coated breeds that struggle most in the cold. The catch is fit. Staffies are broad, deep-chested and compact, and plenty of dog coats are cut for longer, narrower dogs.

Winters in Victoria can get pretty chilly, and Guinness isn’t a fan of either the wet or the cold. Given the choice, he’d rather stay snuggled up in front of the heater until spring. To get him out for a walk, a warm coat is a must.

  • Does a Staffy need a coat? Usually, yes, in cold, wet or windy weather. A commonly quoted rule of thumb is to think about one at around 5°C or below, but it’s a starting point, not a rule.

Do Staffies really need a coat?

Not every Staffy, every day. But several things stack against them in cold, damp weather:

  • A short, close coat. Unlike a husky or a shepherd, a Staffy doesn’t have a dense insulating layer.

  • Low to the ground. Chests and bellies get wet and windswept first.
  • Wet fur. A wet dog that can’t run off the chill gets cold quickly, which is why a waterproof outer matters as much as warmth.

Some Staffies need one more than others. The American Kennel Club’s veterinary advice notes that young puppies, senior dogs and dogs with conditions such as arthritis feel the cold more than healthy adults. The same source quotes a vet making the point that there’s no exact temperature that is too cold for every dog, so watch your own dog.

Common signs a Staffy is too cold include shivering, slowing down or stopping on a walk, lifting paws, a hunched or tucked-up posture, and pulling towards home. If your dog has a health condition, or you’re unsure, ask your vet.

A coat isn’t needed indoors in a heated house, and a damp coat left on will make your dog colder, not warmer. Take it off when you get home.

How to size a coat for a Staffy

The Kennel Club breed standard puts a Staffy at 36–41 cm at the withers, with dogs at about 13–17 kg and bitches at about 11–15.4 kg. That’s a guide, not a guarantee, and individual dogs vary. What matters for a coat is the shape: a compact, square body with a broad chest. Coats cut for longer or narrower dogs tend to pinch across the chest or ride up behind. If your dog falls between two sizes, go up rather than down. Retailers such as Chewy give the same advice. A coat that’s slightly roomy but adjustable is more comfortable than one that restricts the shoulders.

A quick fit check once it’s on:

  • The coat covers from the nape of the neck to the base of the tail.
  • You can slide a couple of fingers under the straps and chest panel.
  • Your dog can walk, trot, sit and lie down without the coat bunching or pulling at the shoulders.
  • The belly panel doesn’t ride into the armpits or restrict toileting.
  • After the first walk, check under the legs and chest for rubbing or red skin.

Getting a coat and harness to work together

Many Staffies pull, so you’ll probably walk yours on a harness. There are two set-ups. Either choose a coat with a zip or opening so you can clip the lead to the harness through the coat, or put the coat on over the harness, which needs a roomier fit. Comfort and safety tips

  • Supervise the first few wears. Staffies are enthusiastic chewers, so watch for chewing at straps, hems and fastenings and never leave a coat on an unsupervised dog.
  • Keep it clean and dry. Wash it regularly and let it dry fully. A damp lining is a cold lining.
  • Check the skin. If your Staffy has sensitive skin or a skin condition, ask your vet before adding a new layer, and choose a soft lining.
  • Don’t overdo it. Take the coat off indoors, in warm cars and once you’re home.
