Do Staffordshire Bull Terriers need a coat in winter?

Usually, yes, in cold, wet or windy weather. Their short, close coat gives little insulation, and Blue Cross lists Staffies among the short-coated breeds that struggle most in the cold. Puppies, seniors and lean dogs feel it most.

There’s no single figure. A common rule of thumb is to consider a coat at around 5°C or below, and sooner in wind or rain. Watch your own dog for shivering, slowing down or wanting to go home.

It depends on the brand, so measure your dog’s chest girth, back length and neck, then compare them to that brand’s size chart. Chest is the most important measurement. If your dog is between sizes, go up. For reference, Guinness measures 71 cm around the chest, 53 cm along the back and 49 cm at the neck, and weighs 28 kg.
