Grooming

Staffies are low-maintenance – but a little grooming goes a long way.

Coat Care

One of the joys of owning a Staffy is their short, smooth coat. Brush weekly with a rubber grooming mitt or bristle brush to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils. This also promotes healthy skin and gives you a chance to check for lumps, bumps, or skin irritation. Staffies shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding in spring and autumn.

Bathing

Bathe your Staffy only when necessary — typically every 6-8 weeks or when they’re particularly dirty or smelly. Over-bathing strips natural oils from their coat. Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo. Staffies with sensitive skin may benefit from an oatmeal-based or hypoallergenic formula.

Nail Care

Trim nails every 2-3 weeks or when you can hear them clicking on hard floors. Use a proper dog nail clipper or grinder. Be careful to avoid the quick (the pink part inside the nail). If your Staffy has dark nails, trim small amounts at a time. Regular walks on pavement can help keep nails naturally worn down.

Dental Hygiene

Brush your Staffy’s teeth several times a week with dog-specific toothpaste. Dental disease is common in dogs and can lead to serious health issues. Dental chews and toys can supplement brushing. Annual dental check-ups with your vet are recommended.

Ear and Eye Care

Check ears weekly for redness, odour, or waxy build-up. Clean with a vet-approved ear cleaner and cotton pads — never insert anything into the ear canal. Wipe around the eyes gently with a damp cloth to remove any discharge. Staffies can be prone to eye conditions, so report any persistent redness or cloudiness to your vet.
