Feeding and Nutrition

The right diet is the foundation of a healthy, happy Staffy.

Choosing the Right Food

Staffies thrive on a high-quality, protein-rich diet. Look for dog foods with real meat (chicken, beef, lamb, or fish) as the first ingredient. Avoid foods with excessive fillers like corn, wheat, and soy. Both wet and dry food can work well — many owners use a combination for variety and dental health.

Portion Sizes and Feeding Schedule

Adult Staffies should be fed twice daily. A typical Staffy weighing 12–17 kg needs around 200–300g of dry food per day, split between two meals. Puppies need more frequent feeding — 3-4 times daily up to 6 months, then twice daily. Always follow the guidelines on your chosen food and adjust based on your dog’s activity level and body condition.

Life Stage Nutrition

Puppies (0–12 months): Need puppy-specific food with higher protein and calcium for growing bones and muscles. DHA for brain development is a bonus.

Adults (1–8 years): Maintain a balanced diet with moderate protein (25-30%) and fat (12-18%). Adjust calories based on activity level.

Seniors (8+ years): Consider senior-specific formulas with joint support (glucosamine), reduced calories, and easily digestible ingredients.

Foods to Avoid

  • Chocolate, grapes and raisins (toxic)
  • Onions and garlic (can cause anaemia)
  • Cooked bones (can splinter)
  • Xylitol (artificial sweetener found in many products)
  • Macadamia nuts and avocade

Weight Management

Staffies love food and can easily become overweight. You should be able to feel (but not see) their ribs. If your Staffy is gaining weight, reduce portion sizes and increase exercise. Treats should make up no more than 10% of their daily calorie intake. Fresh water should always be available.
