Exercise Requirements

A well-exercised Staffy is a happy, well-behaved Staffy.

How much Exercise?

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are energetic dogs that need at least 1 hour of exercise daily. This should be split into two walks plus play sessions. Young, active Staffies may need up to 90 minutes. Under-exercised Staffies can become destructive and develop behavioural issues.

Best Activities

  • Brisk walks: The foundation of daily exercise — aim for two 30-minute walks
  • Fetch: Staffies love chasing balls and frisbees
  • Tug-of-war: Great for building strength and bonding
  • Agility: Excellent for mental and physical stimulation
  • Swimming: Low-impact exercise, though not all Staffies are natural swimmers
  • Flyball: Staffies excel at this high-energy team sport

Exercise by Age

Puppies: Follow the 5-minute rule — 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day. Over-exercising puppies can damage developing joints.

Adults: 60-90 minutes daily, including walks, play, and mental stimulation.

Seniors: Reduce intensity but maintain regular gentle walks. Watch for signs of stiffness or fatigue.

Weather Considerations

Be cautious in extreme heat — Staffies have short muzzles which can make breathing harder in hot weather. Walk in the early morning or evening during summer. In cold weather, their short coat offers minimal insulation, so consider a dog coat for extended winter outings. Always test pavement temperature with the back of your hand before walking.
