Care Guide
Keep your Staffy in tip-top shape with these essential care tips. 🐾
Staffies thrive on a high-quality, protein-rich diet. Feed adult Staffies twice daily with portions appropriate to their weight and activity level. Look for dog foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Avoid overfeeding — Staffies love food and can easily gain weight! Fresh water should always be available. Consult your vet for specific dietary needs, especially for puppies and seniors.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are energetic dogs that need at least 1 hour of exercise daily. This should include brisk walks, play sessions, and mental stimulation. They excel at activities like agility, flyball, and fetch. Be cautious in extreme heat as their short muzzle can make breathing harder. A well-exercised Staffy is a happy, well-behaved Staffy!
One of the joys of owning a Staffy is their low-maintenance coat. Brush weekly with a rubber grooming mitt to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils. Bath only when necessary. Trim nails regularly, clean ears weekly, and brush teeth several times a week. Their short coat means minimal shedding, making them great for keeping your home tidy.
Staffies are generally robust dogs, but they can be prone to certain conditions: hip dysplasia, skin allergies, eye conditions (such as cataracts), and L-2-HGA (a metabolic disorder). Regular vet check-ups, proper vaccination, and health screening can help catch issues early. Responsible breeders test for hereditary conditions. Pet insurance is highly recommended.
Staffies are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable. Start socialisation and basic obedience early. Use positive reinforcement — they respond brilliantly to treats and praise. Be consistent and patient. Short, fun training sessions work best. Focus on recall, loose-lead walking, and basic commands. Staffies can be strong-willed, so firm but gentle leadership is key.
